Port of Sohar supporting the communities

Ramadan is a time when all need to show more mercy to the needing people. Port of Sohar has ever since the start been involved in different projects in the community to support with both money and services.
The management of the Port of Sohar wanted to reach out to even more people this Ramadan and arranged to move a large tent between 10 different identified places in Liwa and Sohar to serve Iftar during the Holy month of Ramadan. Around 200 people came every night, hence approximately 2000 people enjoyed a nice meal. Many people from the management and other employees of the Port Authority came as well to discuss and answer questions from the community. The response was very positive.

The Port Authority together with the authorities of Liwa and Sohar also identified 220 families in need of some extra contribution.

The companies in the Port of Sohar are big employers for the Sohar region. Many companies have plans in place to work with the surrounding communities to improve their way of living. The port authority is not any different. The latest very successful project is known as the Employability project for women.

Young unemployed women from Sohar and Liwa with a university degree were introduced in the spring to a project in which they would become more employable. During the summer they have studied English and gaining more knowledge in using a computer, learn how a company works and how to write a CV at the College of Applied Sciences in Sohar.

Today, 40 women out of 60 have found jobs! The remaining group will be coached and go through on-the-job-training in the next couple of months. The CEO of the Port of Sohar Mr Jan Meijer stated that “he is very proud and happy to have made an impact on the communities around the port in this first of several similar projects. To find jobs for these women mean a lot to their whole families and to the community”.
